Conchita Montenegro

Conchita Montenegro was born in Bilbao, Spain in 1911. During her childhood she was a dancer and ultimately was credited with revolutionizing the presentation of Spanish dances. She performed in Spain, France, and Germany by the time she was thirteen years old. Conchita came to Hollywood in June 1930 with a contract at Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. She was sixteen years old and could not speak a word of English. However, she learned the language well enough in three months to play the female lead opposite Leslie Howard in Never The Twain Shall Meet (1931).

Her next film was Strangers May Kiss (1931). The production stars Norma Shearer, with Montengro as the ingenue lead, playing a Spanish dancer. By mid-1931 Montenegro left MGM and signed with the Fox Film Company where she starred in The Cisco Kid. Conchita made 37 films before retiring from the screen in 1944. She never received the same attention as her contemporary Hispanic stars Delores Del Rio, Raquel Torres, or Lupe Velez, but she was active and well respected in the Spanish film community until her death at age 95 in April 2007.

Here is a snippet of the New York Times review of Never The Twain Shall Meet..."and another newcomer, Miss Montenegro, flashes an appealing Latin loveliness in the role of Tamea."

Conchita Montenegro was a very Beautiful, talented actress. She had a good figure, and anyone fortunate to have co-starred with Conchita Montenegro, must consider himself lucky,to have been her co-star.It's too bad the studios didn't handle her career better than they did.To have made only six pictures here,is our loss, for she was a beautiful and very talented. When she embraced a man,or kissed a man it was like she was off the set and on a date, she made it look like you were the only one for her.

Conchita MOntenegro was a very beautiful, talrnted, actrtess. Plus she was a natural. When she was doing a scene where she had to embnrace or kiss some man she made it look like he was the only one for her.Anyone fortunate enough to have co-starred with Conchita Montenegro, should thank his lucky stars.

I've started a collection of Conchita Montebnegro movies. To date I have "Laughiong at Life',"Strangers May Kiss","The Cisco Kid","Handy Andy",and soon to get "Hell in the Heavens".I bought "Caravan",but I think I have the wrong one.The one I have has Loretta Young in it,but I see the one with Conchita Montenegro in it has Annabella in it.But both have Charles Boyer in it.But it's spelled "Caravana",maybe that's the difference.I'll find that out.

I've been ordering my rare and hard to find movies {especially, with Conchita Montenegro from this site that has found a lot of the movies that I'vfe been looking for and they replied back to me that they know the movie that I'm looking for and it's called "Caravana"aned they're going to try to get it for me.Charles Boyer is in both of the movies, but I think Jean Parker is replaced by Annabella. Unless it's a completely different movie altogrther. But as long as Conchita Montenegro is in it,that's okay with me,even if it is another language, with no sub-titles.

William, yes it is great when you can scout out a collectible you are looking for. Quite the challenge at times, but always worth it - the search is part of the adventure.

Yes it is. But it is worth it.This other movie called "Caravana" was released in Turkey,so it might take a little more time to get a copy, but again the wait is worth it.She was such a good actress, and as a dancer she reigned supreme. It would have been nice to see her co-star in a musical with Fred Astaire. She would of held her own and then some.
